The Bible is full of stories in which God allows a person to come to the edge of their situation only to see Him come through for them. I can think of four immediate examples:
- Moses — God parted the Red Sea.
- Joseph — God gave him wisdom to interpret dreams & favor with the king when imprisoned.
- Daniel — God shut the mouth of the lion after being thrown in the den to die.
- Isaac — God provided the sacrifice of a ram at the very last moment.
“Father,” Isaac asked, “we have the wood and the flint to make the fire, but where is the lamb for the sacrifice?” “God will see to it, my son,” Abraham replied. And they went on. When they arrived at the place where God had told Abraham to go, he built an altar and placed the wood in order, ready for the fire, and then tied Isaac and laid him on the altar over the wood. And Abraham took the knife and lifted it up to plunge it into his son, to slay him. At that moment the Angel of God shouted to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Yes, Lord!” he answered. “Lay down the knife; don’t hurt the lad in any way,” the Angel said, “for I know that God is first in your life—you have not withheld even your beloved son from me.” Then Abraham noticed a ram caught by its horns in a bush. So he took the ram and sacrificed it, instead of his son, as a burnt offering on the altar. Abraham named the place “Jehovah provides”—and it still goes by that name to this day.” – Genesis 22:8-14
Each of these leaders gained a very different view of God after God gave them a breakthrough in their crisis situation. Their life was forever changed in the process of providing their lamb.
Sometimes God lets us come to the edge to see things we would never see otherwise.
- I can’t get pregnant after years of trying.
- I don’t have the money to pay this medical bill.
- My marriage is lifeless and headed for divorce.
- I’ll never find work with this felony charge.
- You called me into missions yet I’m $820/mo short.
In the midst of these circumstances, I have a choice. I can easily shut down and give up. I can easily grow bitter towards God. I can easily try resolving it myself. The question becomes– can I continue to move forward in my faith when I am in a season of disappointment? Can I continue to move forward in my faith when I don’t see my lamb?
It’s during these times God says;
- I am working in ways you don’t see (1 Cor 2:8-9) providing your lamb.
- Be faithful because I am faithful (2 Tim 2:13) in providing your lamb.
- I have made you, I will not forget you (Is 44:21b) providing your lamb.
Hang on. There is a way out. God is faithful when I am faithless.
