As a business coach, I often enter messy business environments helping owners lead their profits, people, and processes. As I go deeper into their muck, I see people are confused of what is expected of them, their roles, and their responsibilities. Role ambiguity is one of the greatest sources of stress a a job. An employee who experiences role clarity knows what they need to do and what is expected of them which leads to higher performance within organizations.
“You are my witnesses,” declares the Lord, “and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor will there be one after me.” — Isaiah 43:10
God is trying to get the Israelites to understand that He is the Almighty and Ultimate Authority not these man-made gods the Israelites were dancing with. So he positions himself as THE ONLY GOD and simplifies our role in the process. We are to be witnesses to this fact that He is God. He has made it very clear to me: God is God and my job is simply to observe Him doing his job by telling others about His character and what He has done.
We see this charge throughout the Bible;
- Solomon prayed for all the foreigners who would visit the Temple that He would be glorified (1 Kings 8:41–43)
- The Healing of a man born blind testified to his power (John 9:17)
- Stones were marked at the Crossing of the Jordan river (Joshua 4:21-24)
This fact should be freeing and peace-giving yet why do I often drift on my mandate? Why I’m I always trying to control my situation taking things into my own hands?
- I anxiously wait news on a medical test thinking the results will surprise Jesus
- I worry if I am good enough to do the job when He wonderfully made me
- I try to control my time yet He is the author of my days
Isaiah 43 reminds me to stay in my lane and let God be God.
