“That very day two of them were on their way to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.” — Luke 24:13-16
The same day as the resurrection, two people were walking to Emmaus trying to process what had happened and a third person joins them apparently clueless about the big news of the day– that Jesus died and had risen. As they share the Jesus story with this man, I find it fascinating that they didn’t recognize who they were talking to– that it was Jesus himself walking with them. But talking it through helps them process their understanding bringing clarity to their faith.
What jumps out at me is this phrase “on the way” as so much happens in the Bible with these three words. When I come across this phrase, a learning opportunity is about to happen;
- The Good Samaritan’s response to interruption (Luke 10)
- The healing of a sick woman (Mark 5)
- Martha opening her home to Jesus (Luke 14)
On the way screams energy and a moving forward. I find when on the move, Jesus seems to meet me and connect me to my assignment. Expect the unexpected as you live your day when you are “on the way” moving you from the ordinary to game-changing possibilities.
It also puts me in an other-centered focus. It’s a perspective of leaning into others and most likely the messy as on the way does not want us stationary nor isolated. He wants us in relationship with others and Himself. Keep moving as it’s harder to grow when we are inactive and in isolation.
Sometimes God moves your supply so you don’t camp out there because He wants you on the way.

What would your life look like if you adopted an “on the way” mentality this year?
