Wow what an exciting Super Bowl LI! Despite being down by 19 points in the 4Q, New England did not give up and mounted the most incredible comeback in Super Bowl history. It goes to show you, if there is still time on the clock, then the game isn’t over. Lately, I’ve been reading about similar comeback stories in the Bible as well;
- Joseph was sold into slavery & imprisoned and yet became second in command of the country (Genesis 37).
- The Prodigal son was welcomed home despite squandering all of his money (Luke 15).
- Jonah was given a second chance from God to go to Nineveh despite running from Him (Jonah 3).
We serve a God who never gives up on us when all too often we give up on ourselves.
Elisha went with them. They came to the Jordan and started chopping down trees. As one of them was felling a timber, his axhead flew off and sank in the river. “Oh no, master!” he cried out. “And it was borrowed!” The Holy Man said, “Where did it sink?” The man showed him the place. He cut off a branch and tossed it at the spot. The axhead floated up. “Grab it,” he said. The man reached out and took it. — 2 Kings 6:4-7
The axe was this man’s moneymaker tool and the head flew off the handle into the water and began sinking. What’s cool is God stepped in and did something immediate and miraculous thru Elisha just when this man was crying out. As a result, the man got his tool back and another chance to continue working. God did the unthinkable when it looked like a lost cause. We all know how gravity works so it doesn’t make sense how this heavy metal object could resurface after it was under the water. What’s cool is the process God used– He symbolically used a wooden stick and exchanged places to restore the axhead. This may be an obscure passage to some but I hope it gives you encouragement and insight into God’s love for you today. He cares about every detail, circumstance, and activity and no situation is so bad that it can’t be restored by God through faith and grace.
Are you currently in a challenging situation where you have lost hope? Where your axhead is underwater and you think there is no way it is going to be returned?
- Company downsized you? He can provide another job.
- Sin too big? No one has gone too far for God to raise him.
- Prodigal son? He can restore one of His own children who has wandered.
- Your business is headed for bankruptcy? He can provide the strategic shift in sales to turn it around.
God is not through with you yet. Even if your situation is sitting at the bottom of a river, and against all odds, if you’re not dead, God’s not done. He still has plans and a future for your life.
Reclaim your axhead and His promises through faith. There’s a tomorrow for every today.

What is your current “axhead” that needs restoring?
