“I hear, and I forget; I see, and I remember; I do, and I understand.” —Ancient Chinese proverb
Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable. So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: [Psalm 78:2] “I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.” — Matthew 13:34-35
Jesus used earthy stories to teach heavenly concepts. He was a master at understanding human behaviors and what moves us to clarity and change. He often spoke in parables because we have different learning styles and radical truths require a different delivery. When people can do more than read what you do, or hear what you do, but actually see what you do using simple, effective ways your odds of being perceived as an expert skyrocket.
Jesus knew that demonstration screamed authority.
- He quoted scripture
- He shared stories
- He knew facts
- He performed miracles
This model is a roadmap for us today. Showing demonstrates our values, provides credibility, shifts our perceived positioning, and I think is a key to business and life. Simply remember 3-2-1;
- 3 facts
- 2 quotes
- 1 story
In sales, marketing, or business development, I don’t expect you to talk in parables but take advantage of how Jesus taught. So make sure you have three facts related to your industry, two quotes, and one story in your back pocket that you can drop into any conversation, presentation, or pitch. It raises your credibility and positions you as the expert in the room.
It works in business and it works in outreach too.
- Facts can be God’s creation or visible ways you know He is real to you.
- Quotes can be memorizing scripture, and inspirational authors or speakers.
- Stories can be how He has changed your life, provided in times of need, or faith of future healing.
- Demonstration can be things like How you work when no one is looking, How you treat your spouse when you’re tired, or how your faith is steadfast in your waiting.
The greatest proclamation of the gospel is not explanation but demonstration.
