Be Where your Feet Are

My two adult children came home from college recently and it was interesting hearing their hearts. Each couldn’t wait to get through school and start living. Each was tired of being poor and wanted to start making real money. Furthermore, each was looking forward to opportunities this summer or next year. It sounded like they were both putting their lives on hold until they receive their college degrees. It was clear to me that their eyes, ears, and hearts were already living 2-4 years in future.

He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing.” — Ephesians 2:10

I think most people make the mistake of thinking that their purpose is in the future ignoring today. Like my kids, I hear people say “I will do this or that (ministry opportunity) once I sell my business”, or “I don’t know the Bible well enough to lead that group”, or “once the kids are out of the house, I’ll jump in for sure” so we wait for when the time is right in our minds. But I want to let you in on a secret– it’s not about you! Paul is saying God has something for you to do that is kingdom worthy and you had better be doing it now.  I think God wants us to see the here & now and be in the here & now right now. We need to understand the significance of being right where your feet are. You see, you are uniquely qualified for the special assignment in the real estate you occupy today.  In this assignment, you will find purpose because you are connecting yourself to a bigger story in which someone else is waiting to hear, see, or be empowered by you.

  • A 10-year old reads a book and raises over $5,000 every year for the past 6 years sponsoring water wells in Africa.
  • A word of encouragement to a friend over coffee flips her self image and begins leveraging her domestic violence experience into a ministry of healing for others.
  • A middle-schooler has lunch with an entrepreneur monthly which propels him to start a vending machine business and now owns 4 businesses as a senior in high school.
  • A grandpa paints with a then 6th grader who starts painting jewelry on bottle caps and has $3M business in high school.

The author, friend, entrepreneur, and grandpa simply made themselves available now. Don’t miss the fruit of this season. Be where your feet are. You are someone else’s miracle.
